The Thirupathur district administration decided to remove beef biryani from the menu at a Biryani fest organised by the administration, as it said that it might hurt the sentiments of other religions.
The fest which was going to be held from May 13-15 to promote tourism in Ambur, Tamil Nadu was postponed, owing to heavy rains predicted during May 13 and 14.
Muslim organisations and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) representatives appealed to the district authorities to reconsider the decision.
VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan questioned the order and condemned the declaration by the Collector. “He should withdraw his stand. Beef should also be allowed or else we feel like he is influenced by Sangh parivar”, stated Thirumavalavan.
The State Commission for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes also wrote to the District Collector stating that the commission had chosen to take up the matter for enquiry as a practice of untouchability in the form of discrimination against SC/ ST and the Muslim population. The Commission also sought an explanation from the authorities.
