Chennai: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s interim general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday denounced rival leader O Panneerselvam as an “opportunist and chameleon” and ruled out the possibility of taking him back into the party even if he or his camp apologised for unruly acts committed in the party office in July.

aiadmk cadre won't forgive scope to take him back in party: palaniswami

In his first visit to the party headquarters since being elected interim general secretary on July 11, the former Tamil Nadu chief minister attacked the rival camp.

The party workers greeted him with great enthusiasm.

When asked about electoral setbacks and the OPS camp’s demand to unify the party, Palaniswami accused Pannerselvam of being opportunistic and changing colours more often than a “chameleon”.

Additionally, Palaniswami ridiculed Panneerselvam for carrying out ‘Dharma Yudha’ against VK Sasikala, who was a trusted confidant of late AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, years ago and now seeking her inclusion into the party.

Furthermore, he claimed, while talking to reporters at the party headquarters in Chennai, that OPS was unfaithful to the party.Related News |

Asked if there has been a split within the AIADMK, Palaniswami said the General Council had expelled only those members who betrayed the party and worked against its interests.

The GC meeting in July had ousted OPS and his supporters from the party, and a legal battle over it continues in court.

In response to a question on the possibility of reuniting with Panneerselvam if his camp apologised, Palaniswami ruled it out.

He wondered if OPS and his supporters would be pardoned or accepted by the party workers for storming AIADMK headquarters.

On July 11, AIADMK headquarters’ lock was broken and vandalism was unleashed, he said.

He claimed that Panneerselvam had led the attack on the AIADMK’s office.

“How will the cadres pardon or accept them back? This is a party of workers.”

The former Tamil Nadu CM accused OPS of being the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s “benami“, who wanted to destroy the party.

Palaniswami denied speculation that the Election Commission might freeze the name and symbol of the party because of rivalry between the two factions. “Anyone can lodge a complaint (with EC), but there must be evidence to support the claim.”

He said he had the support of a majority of party office-bearers, MPs, and MLAs. Therefore, there are no legal obstacles concerning the leadership’s legality and bona fides.

The AIADMK has been successful in overcoming challenges throughout its history, said Palaniswami, adding that the party’s workers would join forces to reestablish Amma’s rule, and that is “our vow and goal”.
